Autism support in Scotland: charities and resources

Oliver Larholt discusses trusted resources and charities in Scotland making a difference in the lives of people with Autism.

Access to the right support, guidance and community can make a truly meaningful difference for autistic people and their carers.

I’ve already discussed autism support and resources in the UK and US, but many of my audience are also based across Scotland.

There a number of dedicated Scottish charities and organisations who work tirelessly to improve opportunities, raise awareness and provide practical support for people with ASD.

Here are some of the leading autism charities and support organisations in Scotland.

Scottish Autism

Founded in 1968, Scottish Autism is one of Scotland’s largest autism charities. The organisation provides a wide range of services, including education, residential care, supported living and outreach programmes for all ages.

Alongside direct support, Scottish Autism works to improve public understanding of autism through research, training and awareness campaigns, helping create more inclusive communities across Scotland.

National Autistic Society Scotland

The National Autistic Society is a national charity with a strong presence throughout Scotland.

Its Scottish services include helplines, local branches, campaigning, employment support and guidance for education and healthcare professionals. The organisation also works closely with policymakers to improve outcomes for autistic people across the country.

Autism Initiatives Scotland

Autism Initiatives Scotland focuses on helping autistic people live as independently as possible. Through supported living, community outreach and employment programmes, the charity provides tailored services.

Its work encourages greater independence while promoting inclusion within local communities.

Number 6 – One Stop Shop

Based in Edinburgh, Number 6 is a specialist support organisation for autistic adults. It provides information, advocacy and social wellbeing programmes.

These programmes are designed to help individuals build confidence and develop lasting connections within their communities.

Local support networks

Alongside national charities, many local organisations, parent groups and community services operate throughout Scotland.

Speaking with healthcare professionals, schools or local councils can be a helpful way to discover services available nearby.

Supporting autism together

Autism support extends far beyond individual organisations. It is built through collaboration between charities, educators, healthcare professionals, volunteers and communities who all share the same goal: creating opportunities for autistic people to thrive.

By supporting autism charities across Scotland and the wider UK, we can help improve awareness, strengthen local services and create a more inclusive future for everyone.
